How it is made

Classic examples combine a light ground with two or more darker yarn colors in a twill-based check. The illustration uses four light, four dark, four light and four accent yarns in both directions over 2/2 twill. Manufacturers also add larger windowpanes or vary the scale.

How to recognize it

Look for alternating colored broken checks within a regular repeat.

What to distinguish

A large overcheck is optional, not the defining feature. The multicolor arrangement distinguishes a typical gun club from simple two-color houndstooth.
