A wide area of fabric is gathered into regular pleats. Stitches connect selected folds to control fullness and make a textured pattern.

How to recognize it

Look for stitch-linked pleats forming compact geometric areas beside looser cloth.

What to distinguish

Honeycomb smocking describes one arrangement; a woven honeycomb texture does not use this gathering technique.
