How it is made

Two contrasting sets of narrow stripes cross in warp and weft. Makers produce the pattern on different grounds, including plain-woven shirting.

How to recognize it

Look for open pale squares bounded by a repeating sequence of differently colored lines.

What to distinguish

Tattersall is more specific than a generic grid but does not require one fiber or weave. Gingham generally uses broad equal bands rather than these fine outlines.
