Tie-dye

Bound or gathered cloth resists dye in selected areas to create a pattern.

How it is made

The cloth is compressed and secured before color is applied. Opening it reveals rings, stripes, radiating forms or irregular areas determined by the preparation.

How to recognize it

Look for protected pale zones and color transitions associated with folds or ties.

What to distinguish

Tie-dye is not limited to rainbow spirals or one country. Shibori and other named traditions have specific histories that should be credited when identifiable.
