How it is made

Historic toiles used printed scenes, often pastoral or narrative, distributed across the cloth. Contemporary designers retain that format while changing the subjects.

How to recognize it

Look for groups of people, buildings, trees or landscapes treated as little scenes.

Common uses

  • Upholstery
  • Clothing

What to distinguish

Toile can also mean a plain cloth or a garment fitting mock-up. A modern toile-style print need not have been made in Jouy-en-Josas.
